JAMIE'S STORY
Jamie was born on 20th aug 2000, he weighed 2lb 15oz and was 10 weeks early due to the fact his oesophagus was not joined to his stomach so he could not swallow, he also had a hole in his heart.
He was operated on within four hours ( to rejoin it ) it was touch and go as to if he would pull through.
He spent 3 months at great ormond st hosp, during this time he had a grade two brain hemorrhage and minor heart attack , he also had an operation to stop acid reflux and a V.S.D operation to slow the blood flow to his heart.
He come home for the first time in nov 2000.
He needed to gain weight for his open heart surgery which was done in march 2001 to close the hole, docs couldn't wean him off ventilator and found the patch had come away and he had to have his 2nd open heart surgery within a week, this time through the thick heart muscle.
Jamie was sent home to recover but was still poorly and on 31st may 2001 he was rushed back to Great Ormond Street Hospital where he had a massive arrest as he got through doors ( he was basically dead) , due to the fact a pulminary vein from his heart to his left lung had become blocked and he lost the use of his left lung but no one knew this at the time. A couple of hours later he had another massive arrest and docs said he wouldn't pull through and all his organs began to shut down.
The next six months were spent on and off life support, during this time he had kidney failure a second time but the docs could not help him as he had developed peritonitis the first time, so he had to fight on his own, we watched as he ballooned and turned yellow (He was in gods hands) but Jamie being Jamie, pulled through this.
Doctors advised us to withdraw treatment as they feared he would be brain damaged but we refused.
Finally in November 2001 Jamie was allowed home, but doctors only gave him a few weeks to live.
In November 2007 Jamie had a stroke which affected his sight in the left eye and then in November 2008 he had swine flu which he fought off but this then caused his problems with the platelets.
Jamie was due to have an operation in March 2012 but due to the swine flu causing him to have low platelets ( normal platelets are 200 to 400 ) Jamies are only 33. the surgeons decided it was too dangerous as his blood will not clot and he could bleed to death so they will not operate. Jamie also bruises easily and gets little blood spots under his skin. We are waiting to hear what they plan to do about his platelets, as he still needs to have the operation.
Jamie is going to have a heamoglobin infusion in April 2013 in the hope it will sort the platelets out and if not he will need platelet transfusions before and after his operation.
Jamie can still only eat pureed or baby food, he only drinks water and is still in pads, he has a gastrostomy button in his tummy for his medication and liquid feeds, he is in a wheelchair but can use a special walking frame. Despite all he has been through he still has the biggest smile and a cheeky personality, please help us enrich his life like he has ours.
